I am afraid there is no exciting cliffhanger for this conclusion to the Hospice & Medicare Part D blog binge. From conversations I had with people at the AAHPM & HPNA Annual Assembly in San Diego last week and with colleagues around the country, there is a sense of general frustration coupled with resignation. The cliche is tired, but, in fact, this is a situation where truly "it is what it is" at this point. Certainly the national trade associations have advocated tirelessly on behalf of their hospice members but it is highly unlikely that the Medicare Part D/hospice issues are going away. What is likely is that during the rest of 2014, hospices and Plan D sponsors will be trying to sort it all out, minimize unintended negative consequences, document incessantly, and await future rulemaking to find out how awful or reasonable the independent reviewer process will be.
